Whitney, I agree that the current hierarchy is bad. However, IMHO the answer is not to do away with hierarchy. We humans are communal animals, and we need to always be trying to nurture our unity, as well as our diversity. The Greek root of hierarchy and be translated “holy order,” a good thing.
Hiya, Sam. Thanks for weighing in. I agree with you. You've outlined perfectly the way I view hierarchy's role. It should not be an end in and of itself, but a means to a communion. Hierarchy alone results in othering and separation. Bravo. ox
Whitney. you are ceding your agency for change. develop the strength and understanding to make change. I refer you to A Short History of Progress by Ronald Wright, one of the Massey lecture series. available at bit.ly/MasseysApp. all the lectures can be downloaded free at the Apple store.
Hi, Iola. My apologies it took me so long to respond. I wasn't able to download this particular lecture from apple; when I try the link you provided, it just spins and spins. When I tried to find it on the Massey Lectures website, it said it could not be found. Clearly, you saw it in there, but I am at a loss.
Still, I am grateful to you for your comment, as it reminded me of a wonderful essay/speech collection given to the Massey audience by a spectacular thinker, Doris Lessing. I haven't read those essays in about 10 years, but you have inspired me to return to them. I wonder if after the past 4 years of publishing docu-mental I will agree with Lessing as thoroughly as I did when I read them a decade ago.
If possible, could you sum up in a few sentences why you think Ronald Wright's work would be edifying for me? How am I ceding my agency for change? I personally feel I have to pull in and regroup. I don't feel I have no agency. I feel I have no energy! LOL.
Thank you so much, and thank you for being a docu-mental supporter!
this is my favorite issues yet, i’m excited for you to continue exploring the world through this lens.
i don’t comment because your writing leaves me ponderous and reflective -- something i love!
Hi, Kati:
Thank you. That is such a fine compliment. I appreciate it tremendously. xW
